What is Ear Microsuction & irrigation and who is it for?
Ear Microsuction is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive procedure designed to remove excess earwax, also known as cerumen. Using a specialised suction device and an illuminated microscope, our trained professionals can precisely target and remove blockages, alleviating symptoms such as:
- Hearing loss
- Earaches
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Itching or a sensation of fullness in the ear
When electronic ear irrigator is used; it involves a pressurised flow of warm water that removes the build-up of earwax. The irrigator has variable pressure control so that irrigation can be performed at the minimum pressure. This is still again a safe way of removing ear wax.

What do we look for?
Firstly we look to see if the canal is compacted with wax. If you do have a build up of wax Daniella will then talk you through the next steps for safe removal. Once the wax is removed I want to make sure your ears are healthy by these signs:
- The skin in the ear canal looks healthy
- The ear drum is healthy and shiny
- The ear drum is in tact and no perforated ear drums
- I can see the two tiny bones behind the thin layer of skin in the ear drum
Microsuction
A safe and effective method for earwax removal, ensuring comfort and clarity.
Microsuctioning is a safe and easy way to remove wax. A small suction tube is used in the ear canal to remove any of the wax or any other foreign objects we are able to see with our eyes using our eye loupes equipment. The gentle suction acts in the same way a hoover would, so please be prepared it might be a bit noisy but it is quick and painless.
When the wax is deeper than what we can see with our loupes, irrigation comes into play.
Ear Irrigation
Gentle irrigation techniques to maintain ear hygiene and health.
When irrigator is used it involves a pressurised flow of warm water that removes the build-up of earwax. The irrigator has variable pressure control so that irrigation can be performed at the minimum pressure. This is still again a safe way of removing ear wax. Due to irrigation using pressure to remove the wax, we would always use this method in both ears. Even the second ear was clear from wax. This is to even out the pressure.
